Rose, a 73-year-old retiree and mother of four, has spent most of her life in the same charming home. Having worked in the sewing factory for a significant part of her career, Rose transitioned to daycare in 2000, dedicating herself to the well-being and development of children until 2010.Despite the warmth of her home and the cherished memories it held, after Hurricane Florence, Rose found herself facing structural challenges that threatened her sense of security. A weak spot in the floor, a problematic ceiling, and an unknown leak beneath the toilet became sources of anxiety and fear within the confines of her once-safe haven.
While she was familiar with Habitat, Rose was pleasantly surprised to learn that Habitat not only builds new homes but also has a Critical Repair program. This discovery marked the beginning of a transformative journey for Rose and her cherished home.
The repairs carried out by Cape Fear Habitat volunteers and staff, led by dedicated individuals like Roger and Scott, brought a renewed sense of security to Rose’s life. The floor was now sturdy, the hidden leak beneath the toilet was fixed, and new light fixtures were installed. “I just appreciate it,” states Rose. “Roger and Scott were real friendly. All the volunteers that came were all nice.”
Expressing her gratitude for the program, Rose acknowledges the impact it has had on her life. The repairs not only restored the physical integrity of her home but also touched her heart with the kindness and warmth of the volunteers and staff. As she enjoys the newfound comfort in her home, Rose looks ahead with hope and a sense of security knowing that Habitat is here to help.
