Servando, along with his wife and son, lived in a rented mobile home in a flood-prone park prior to joining the Habitat program. Concerns about the land being sold to developers have left them uncertain about their future. Despite facing difficulties in securing a home loan a few years ago, Servando and Adriana aspire to have stability and a place to call their own.

Having immigrated from Mexico two decades ago, Servando and Adriana met four years ago and share a desire for homeownership. Inspired by a friend’s experience with Habitat, they applied and were accepted into the program as first-generation homebuyers. Their acceptance was based on their current living situation, willingness to partner, and ability to succeed in the program.

As they progressed through the program, Servando and Adriana appreciate the supportive community they’ve found, describing it as feeling like they’ve known everyone for years. The affordable Habitat mortgage has alleviated worries about the future and land sale uncertainties. It not only provides financial security but also a place to pursue their passions – Servando in carpentry and furniture restoration, and Adriana in owning a business.

Post-Habitat homeownership, they plan to ensure security and happiness in their retirement. Servando aims to further his passion for carpentry, while Adriana dreams of opening her own business. Despite completing the Homeownership Program and moving into their new home in February 2025, they express a desire to continue supporting local and global Habitat initiatives. Their sentiment about being selected is summed up in their words, “For us, it was like winning the lottery.”
